Will's Half Birthday Party

Since it's so hard to celebrate a birthday two days after Christmas, we moved Will's celebration to his half birthday.  He was pleased that it allowed him to have a birthday party and invite all "his friends who can go in the road" as he calls them.  (These are all the kids in the neighborhood who are allowed to go in the street and to each other's yards to play.  Will is not allowed in the road, so he distinguishes them by the fact that they are.)

We had a really fun day, but I never imagined how much work a "simple" birthday party could be.  I really didn't think I was planning anything complicated (some water toys, cake, ice cream cones, half hamburgers & hotdogs to go with the "half birthday" theme, and a few streamers and balloons).  All I can say is thank goodness so many people were here to help.  Between Jerry, Mom, Grandad, Grandma, Kristen, and myself we managed to pull it together - despite the fact that the grill wouldn't light and we had to cook all the hamburgers and hot dogs inside at the last minute!  : )

In the end it was a really fun time for everyone.  The weather was perfect, and all the kids had a blast with the water toys.

This turned out to be one of my favorite pictures of Will's party!  Josie got caught in the act of steeling a bun (which I never noticed until I looked at the pictures) and Will is making one of his typical "I don't want a picture" faces.

A Busy Week

We have been so busy this week!  I definitely overbooked us - Will is doing swim lessons every day from 11 to noon, Vacation Bible School is nightly from 6 to 8:30 and I volunteered to help, Will's summer session of preschool started Thursday and he took cupcakes to celebrate his half birthday, we are preparing for Will's party on Saturday, and to top it all off Nationwide (their insurance company) is arguing with us about paying the storage fees from the accident we were in because we did not file it as a claim against OUR insurance company.  I'll spare you a long, raving blog post about that issue but how could any rational person argue that we should be liable for ANYTHING after getting hit by a drunk driver!!!

My saving grace this week has been Mom.  Thankfully she came up to help me get everything done.

Swimming lessons this week have gone from a nightmare to a dream.  The first two days were
bad and Wednesday was excruciating (Will chose to scream for 30 minutes), but Thursday was a turning point.
We stayed after lessons, had a picnic lunch with Natalee and Brady and then swam for a couple hours.
During that time Will learned to go under and at one point tried his version of swimming under water
(stand in water almost chest deep, bend over and stick your head under, paddle your arms and walk forward)!
I was so proud of him and I even had my camera with me but I didn't remember to take any pictures since I
was in the pool watching him.

Friday I remembered my camera again but frustratingly I missed my opportunity for a photo since I spent all my time during his swim lesson on the phone arguing with the insurance adjuster over the storage fees and documenting my conversation.  And this conversation happened AFTER I told him yesterday that I didn't want to speak with him again and I wanted to talk to his supervisor!    GGGGRRRRR!!   But I digress...
I really can't even tell you how thankful I am to have Mom here this week!
Thanks to her help Will had some really cute half-strawberry-half-chocolate
cupcakes to take to preschool for his half birthday!

Sibling Rivalry

Will has been very mad at Napoleon recently because Napoleon stole Will's stuffed hampster toy.  I told Will he really didn't want it back after the dog chewed all over it, plus he shouldn't have left it lying in the floor where Napoleon could get it!

Our Traffic Accident

We were in a very bad traffic accident on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.  I've been too emotional about it to focus on writing an appropriate post before now.

We were driving to Altoona to shop for a few things before vacation the following week.  The accident happened on Route 22 in the bad curve on Short Mountain where there are four lanes.  Jerry was driving and as we started around the curve a motorcycle heading the opposite direction started passing a car then crossed the yellow line into our lanes.  At first I was just confused about what he was doing but then time slowed down and fear surpassed my confusion as I realized he kept drifting toward us and we were about to collide.  As he kept coming toward us Jerry hit the brakes and swerved right as far as he could but he couldn't get over far enough - there was an embankment on our side.  At the last second the back of the motorcycle started to swing around like he was fishtailing.  The back end of the bike struck the front of our car on the driver's side with a small but sickening crunch and slid all the way down the side of our car.

When we came to a stop and I looked back I saw a man lying on the road with his bike some distance away.  I was frantically crying but was able to call 911.  Jerry had trouble getting his door open but when he did people had surrounded the injured man.  I stayed in the car with Will and tried to explain to the 911 operator where we were.  I couldn't think or talk clearly enough, but he was able to pinpoint our location through my cell phone signal.  After I hung up I realized my crying was upsetting Will so I tried to calm down and told him that we needed to say a prayer.  We prayed for the driver's health, his salvation, and his family.  We prayed for the rescue workers to arrive quickly and we prayed a prayer of thanks that we were unharmed.

People from other stopped vehicles had crowded around the man on the ground and someone started CPR on him.  I lost a lot of hope for his survival though when I saw them stop CPR before the first responders arrived.  The first responders arrived quickly, but each minute still felt like an eternity when you know someones life is hanging in the balance.  They resumed CPR but it was (or felt) much longer before the fire trucks arrived.  One fireman checked on us and helped Will and I out of the vehicle since we were parked right against the bank and the rest went to help the motorcycle driver.

The man who had been driving the car that the motorcycle attempted to pass came to talk to Jerry and told him he saw what had happened and would be sure to relate the incident to the police.  He said the motorcycle had been following him just inches from his bumper and then tried to speed around him and lost control.

Several people around the injured man were hysterically crying and I eventually realized that they must be friends or family.  I sympathized with their pain but was hesitant to interfere personally so I prayed again for their suffering.

Ambulances finally arrived and it wasn't until I saw two stretchers being prepared that I realized two people had been injured.  I asked a rescue worker and they said the driver's wife had been a passenger on the bike but they couldn't tell me much about their condition except that a helicopter was coming to take them to a hospital outside Pittsburgh.

After the injured couple had been taken from the scene a man and woman came over to talk to us and ask if we were all ok.  They told us the riders' names were Janie and Randy and that they were their best friends.  They were on the way to kayak and Randy's sister was behind them with the kayaks in an SUV.  She hugged me and as I expressed how sorry I was all this happened she said don't be sorry - there was nothing you all could have done.  Her husband told us that Randy had been riding a motorcycle all his life but that he had just recently gotten this new bike and he shouldn't have been driving it that way.  Through my tears I told her I wish things had happened differently and that I would keep praying for their family.  She hugged Will and asked him if he was ok.

Will was so good the whole time.  He watched them take the injured people out in the ambulance and watched the police and rescue workers doing their jobs.  He asked some basic questions but mostly he was entertained by an alphabet computer game and by the honeysuckle I showed him how to taste.  I think we were fortunate that he was old enough to know what happened but not yet old enough to understand death and dying to be scared and upset by the accident.

Our neighbor, Perry, was so kind to come pick us up and he arrived while they were photographing the scene of the accident.  The officer told us we were free to leave after he had asked us a few questions and also told us he didn't think the driver had survived the accident and that the wife had serious injuries.

I have been working on writing this post for several days and even now, two weeks later, the accident keeps replaying in my mind again and again.  I know it must be for Jerry too because at random times he will make a comment and I only know what he's referring to because the accident is forefront in my mind too.  I can't help but imagine the fear and guilt the man must have felt and what thoughts of his family must have passed through his mind.

We continue to pray for the wife and her family and friends every day and also for the blessing that we were uninjured.  The accident was covered by the evening news, newspaper, and radio and we read in his obituary that they have a daughter at home.

About a week after the accident Jerry heard from one of the guys at work that the wife was still in the hospital.  Her ankle was shattered and she had bone fragments in her lungs.  They had not yet told her that her husband passed away in the accident.

Two weeks passed without any further updates and without receiving a police report, which is needed before the driver's insurance company can authorize any charges such as a rental vehicle.  We obtained a rental car on our own and have just been waiting.  It's so hard to feel so close to a tragedy like this and not know how the survivors are faring.  So we just continue to pray daily for the wife, their daughter and their family and we give thanks that we have the financial means to cover our expenses while waiting on the police report.

Yesterday evening Jerry received a call from the officer covering the accident.  He let us know that the wife had been taken off her ventilator, which sounds like her condition must be improving, and they also told her that her husband didn't survive the crash.  The officer had also received the results of the toxicology report which indicated the driver's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.  Not being a drinker myself, I was curious just how much alcohol you would need to consume to attain that level.  Did the guy have a couple beers with lunch at a picnic?  According to http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm a person weighing 180 lbs. would have to consume six beers over two hours to reach the legal limit of .08%

That finding of course incited many new emotions and has prompted me to pray even more for their daughter and what she is facing as a result.  I hope this will resolve quickly, but mostly I hope that it will serve as a reminder that may prevent similar tragedy and heartache for others in the future, namely Will.

Vacation to Sanibel Island

We planned a long weekend in Florida on Sanibel Island to use some of our Skymiles.  We were excited to find some nice shells and let Will enjoy the beach.  I was surprised by the color of the water there.  It wasn't the bright blue, clear water I expected but the abundance of shells was fun.

My favorite part (aside from the yellow crab we saw on the beach) was the airboat ride we took on Lake Trafford, the headwaters of the Everglades.  We saw numerous, huge alligators, deer, and various bird species - not to mention the cows!

Overall it was a nice, relaxing, easy vacation.

Saying Goodbye to Caleb

Caleb came over to play one last time before they move to Dallas, Georgia.  We're sad to see them go!  Will and Caleb always played well together and Monica brought a little of the South for me to enjoy (they're from Tennessee).  Oh well, I guess now we have a reason to visit Georgia!  : )

Napoleon is Recovering Nicely

While we were in Covington yesterday, Napoleon had his follow-up appointment with Dr. Campbell for his bladder stone removal surgery.  He got his stitches removed, which he was very happy about.  I was glad too because now he isn't growling at his back side anymore!

Based on the analysis of the stone, we learned that it was composed of calcium oxalate.  This indicates that the cause is likely genetic and a special diet would be helpful in preventing a recurrence.  It also means no more milk, cheese or dairy products as snacks.  Poor Napoleon - no more finishing Daddy's cereal at night.  : (

We have one high-maintenance little dog.  We were reviewing the problems he's had so far and here's his list...
  • A baby tooth had to be pulled since his adult tooth came in behind it
  • He had an undescended testicle, complicating his neuter procedure
  • He had an umbilical hernia
  • He had an anal gland rupture
  • He is allergic to sodium laureth sulphate in shampoo and soap, which took years for me to figure out
  • He almost died before having emergency exploratory surgery to find and remove a piece of corn cob from his small intestine
  • He had a bladder stone removed and now requires prescription dog food
All of this and he is only ten years old!!  I can only hope he will be less problematic in his older years!

But just look how cute he is!!  Who couldn't love this little
face, problems and all?!
We decided to ride to Martinsburg today to pick strawberries and to try out the Traditions Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant.  We had a great time picking berries.  It was VERY hot, but the berries were beautiful and delicious.  I think I'll go back for more this week!  The restaurant was very good too.  : )

I forgot to take any pictures in the field, but Will helped pick too.
Though I'm pretty sure he ate more than he put in his bucket!
We drove through a horrible thunderstorm on the way home.  It was raining so hard
that we could hardly see the road.  Fields everywhere were flooded.
This section of Route 26 was barely passable.

Oh, I Like'm

Just as a bit of history so you will appreciate the story you should know that Will's new thing is watching for vehicles while we're driving.  When he sees one of interest he calls out "Ooooh, I like him" but he runs all the words together so it sounds like "oo-I-like-m."  This phrase is sprinkled throughout our conversations in the car.  "Mommy, today Napoleon was "oo-I-like-m" barking and "oo-I-like-m" chasing his "oo-I-like-m" butt!"

Will and I drove to Covington yesterday to take Grandad back home.  On the way back home today, Will fell asleep while he still had a couple bites of his yogurt parfait left.  I didn't have any way to keep it cold while he slept so I threw it away, not wanting him to eat old yogurt when he woke up.

Well, first thing upon waking from his nap he asked where his yogurt parfait was.  I told him it got old and I had to throw it out.  That ticked him off and he started crying one of those forced, loud, whiny cries.  I just ignored him but as I listened, I noticed the crying went something like this...

WWWWWAAAAAAA"oo-I-like-m"AAAAAAAAAAAAA"oo-I-like-m"AAAAAAAAAAAA"oo-I-like-m"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.  WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAA"oo-I-like-m" AAAAA"oo-I-like-m""oo-I-like-m"AAAAAA.

My child was punctuating his crying with "oo-I-like-m."  Obviously that was some very insincere crying!!

Will FINALLY Caught Some Fish!!

Today was the last chance we had for Will to catch some fish while Grandad was up here and we got lucky!  We went to the Aitch Recreation Area on Raystown Lake and started catching Perch right away.  Will and I even hooked a huge carp once but luckily he just bent the hook and got off!

Will had fun reeling in the fish and enjoyed holding them too.  We kept several so we could bring them home for dinner since that's what Will talks about all the time - catching a fish and bringing it home for me to cook for dinner.  After Grandad cleaned all six of our fish we might have enough for all of us to have a bite of fish with our hamburgers tonight!

I was so glad that we caught something today but it was really surprising that even when Will wasn't catching any fish he was still having fun.  He must have inherited a love of fishing from Grandad!  I'm so thankful Grandad came and showed him such a good time this week.

A guy from the Army Corps of Engineers came by while we were fishing and just
after Will had spotted a snake.  He asked Will to hold his hat for him
while he checked out the snake (which looked like a copperhead
but turned out to be a water snake, thankfully!)
